What is an API?
API stands for Application Programming Interface. API’s are a set of functions and procedures that allow for the creation of applications that access our data.
The API is not our servers nor database, it’s the code that governs the access points for the server.
Think of it this way: You’re in a restaurant looking at the menu. The menu is our API endpoints. When you order a dish, you don’t know how or where the meal is prepared, you get your dish ready-to-eat on your table. The process that happened from when you placed your order until it was presented on your table is our API.
Why did we develop the API?
Our data is valued, and an API allows audience to use our data more quickly, easy and efficient.
What can our API be used for?
Our API can be used by everyone that want to use our data. It could be another cultural institution that want to refer to our data in on their website, a school project that shows artists from their local community, in a hackaton and much more.
What does our API contain?
Our API is an extract of the data from our content-management system (Museum Plus). It contains detailed, but selected information about an artwork and photos in different formats.
